Dr Avenell (Av) Chew is an Australian-qualified eye surgeon, born and raised in Perth, Western Australia. He graduated Dux of his year at Churchlands Senior High School and was awarded a General University Exhibition, setting the tone for his academic achievements. He went on to complete his medical degree at The University of Melbourne before returning to Perth to pursue his passion for ophthalmology and attain fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists.
Following his Ophthalmology specialty training, Dr Chew undertook further, advanced subspecialist fellowship training in Cornea & External Eye Diseases at the Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre in the United Kingdom. This eye hospital is a world-renowned centre and the second largest eye centre in Europe. He gained valuable experience in managing complex ocular surface diseases and performed advanced surgical procedures while working alongside some of the most respected names in the field.
Through his career, Avenell has published multiple articles in peer-reviewed medical journals and has presented his research at international conferences.
Dr. Chew holds a public hospital appointment at Fremantle Hospital and Health Service, where he is actively involved in teaching eye surgery trainees and Fellows in the area of cornea & external eye disease. He is passionate about passing on his knowledge and expertise to the next generation of ophthalmologists
